I’ll have two scoops of vanilla clouds, please!

The day of our second sessions was “Wacky Wig Wednesday” and some teachers surprised their students – and me – by showing up with zany tresses!😁 Nettelhorst 2nd graders got down to the business of comparing things, looking for similarities in color, sound, shape, size, movement or action, feeling, and idea. We examined and discussed comparisons such as “clouds are like flying ice cream” and played with the idea of going into an ice cream shop and asking for two scoops of vanilla clouds, or mashed potatoes! When it was time for students to create their own comparisons, we talked about stretching, or expanding our ideas to create a poem.

and the wind is moving like
the earth spinning. All the feelings
that are spinning around
What do these feelings want?

Charlotte P.

The sun is lie a cheesy pizza
in the sky.
My smile is like a half moon
on my face.

Parker M.

The sun is like a big warm yellow ball
that someone bounced in the sky and got stuck there.

Water dripping is like someone playing drums
in a cave echoing through my world making a difference.

Sy D.

A banana is like a upside down bowl
and upside down bowls are as hard as rocks.
a upside down bowl is like a half moon
and a half moon is as dark as night.
a half moon is like a crater
and a crater is as big as the earth.

Lily C.

The sun is like a bright flashlight
My smile is like a boat to happy
My friends are like sprinkles on a cake

they both make me upset.

Early Bird
by Foster N.

Calder is like
a bird that
wakes up really
early. He
starts to
talk
a lot
now I’m up
and I can’t
go to sleep
I’m up.

Me
by Avery E.

I am like a plant
I grow.
I keep gorwing
soon I make others
soon I die.
But then the
others make and
die.
I am like a plant
I grow.

Gabriel W.

A torpedo is like a shark
diving down, down, down.
Yarn is like a snake
going into the woods.

Ms. Froman’s Mouth
by Bill W.

Ms. Froman’s mouth
is like a
volcano
spilling out
words! When
I hear Blah
Blah Blah
it
is
annoying
me out
of sight!
Tearing me
apart just
waiting for
real words!

My feelings
are dying to
hear words
My body feels
weird,
mean
and sad!

and reflecting
to give us light.

Cloud
by Maeve P.

a paintbrush
is like a cloud
because

a sad face is
like a cloud
because
tears
drip
down.
