What can writing with a partner accomplish that can’t be done alone? This is the question the 7th graders of Clinton reflected on after watching “Cat Poem” by the Get Lit Los Angeles BNV Slam team. After pairing up, students used Venn Diagrams to interview each other and find out what they had in common. Then, they chose a topic and wrote poems that included a mix of individual and shared lines. Students wrote about shared lived experiences, favorite foods, mutual dislikes, and histories of their friendships, using poetry to build bridges between them.

“ORANGE”
by IB R. and Youssof R.
Oranges taste way
better than apples.
They’re the same color as
their name! (Just like a lemon)
It’s an enthusiastic color!
If you look up an orange’s
serial color code, its actually
the color tangerine. And, if
you search up a tangerine’s
serial color code, it’s actually
orange. This is mildly upsetting
It’s the same color of
crunchy leaves in the Fall
We love the color
orange!!

“Where the flowers speak”
by Aamena P. and Mishka M.
We see petals soft as whispered secrets,
swaying in the breeze…
I hear the quiet hum of bees dancing from bloom
to bloom.
The world smells like sunshine mixed with
perfume.
We feel the earths breath, warm and alive beneath my
feet
Flowers speaking colors, bold, bright, and brave
My heart feels calm, like a garden after rain
I taste spring in the air, fresh and full of promise
Each flower is a small hope, blooming loud
in silence.
