Early Readers Create A Visual Poem

With the help of Poet in Residence Philip Berezney, 1st graders in CPC’s Early Readers pilot program created an eye-catching collage. Phillip worked with these students over 10 weeks, culminating in a collaborative piece that includes multi-lingual lines and hand drawn illustrations.

Residency Students Erase for Charity

Students at the South Loop Poetry Club learned about blackout poems by reading Austin Kleon’s “Newspaper Blackout” and “Blanked verse: the power of erasure poetry” by Carol Rumens. Discussion focused on how the source of the text can impact its subject. Here’s a poem entitled “Nature” by residency student Annabel G.

the

green grass and

ancient trees

dark night with sparks of stars

on fire so its love may be seen

by her beautiful eyes
