How quickly 20 weeks flies by! We’ve come close to the end (!) of poetry sessions for Water’s 7th graders. They’ve already proven to be experienced revisers of their writing, and we’re wrapping up this residency with another session of revision. Students watched spoken word examples from Rudy Francisco, Elizabeth Acevedo, and a teenager named Julia as inspiration before beginning to revise their poems. Take a look below and enjoy!
New, but Not
by Oliver R.
New, it feels as if a switch was flipped
New, my rain feels like a rollercoaster full of ups and downs
It feels new, but not
New, the world feels brand new like it changed, but it didn’t
New, I feel new, not the world
It feels new, but not
New, my mind feels like a blank slate
New, I can’t tell what’s new and what’s not
I feel like I’m the change,
Nothing changes. Just me.
My Jewelry
by Avery W.
You sit on my neck watching the world spin around me
6:00pm you lie on my desk after I unclasp you from my neck
staring at me as I get ready for bed day after day
rust forming around your circular values of life
you could never fade from mine
I tap my foot
I shake my leg
I twist my bracelets beading
You are here
I don’t forget
Good & Bad
by Lilian E.M.
“Half the world is good
Half the world is bad”
That’s kind of true,
kind of not
There’s things that make it good
and
Things that make it bad
Dishonesty –
bad
A random act of kindness –
good
People dying for a bad cause –
bad
Having a good time with your friends –
good
Backstabbers –
bad
Cold ice cream on a summer day –
good
Honestly
There aren’t such simple things
as good and bad
It’s simple to do something good
or bad,
but to some poeple
something good
might be bad
or something bad
might be something good
It’s different
for me,
for you,
for everyone & anyone
