Sarah Fay Chicago, IL

Sarah Fay’s poems, essays, reviews and interviews have appeared in The Paris Review, The Missouri Review, BOMB, Nimrod and Time Out/New York.

Billy Collins’ comments:
“The best poems are always so difficult to comment on because they have successfully transcended the limitations of prose and begin at the point where prose lies exhausted. This set of short poems shows a delicacy, a refinement, and a genuine distaste for any superfluous words. Each of them conveys the literary pleasures of surprise and bewilderment.”

Spring: South Bronx
Sarah Fay

Often, to pass the time,
the students ask questions:

What’s a grove? What’s dew?
I speak to them of marigolds
with bright orange blossoms.
They are right not to believe my stories
of spring. They say the hallways reek.
Even the breeze loses patience,
moves on to other trees.
