Upside-down Cliché Poems
Submitted by Molly Backes on January 23, 2009 - 9:53pm.

This week at McCutcheon we read William Shakespeare's poem "Sonnet 130" and talked about how Shakespeare takes a cliché and turns it on its head to surprise the reader into paying attention. The poets then chose common clichés and turned them upside-down to help us see things in new and surprising ways.

Mix Match
by Tamia L.

Winter is not like a blanket; it's like
a broken down car in the summer;
When life gives you lemons you make
lemonade; it really gives you a mess
Home is not where the heart is; it's just
where my mom is; The moon isn't a
ball of cheese; it's a light that shines
through my window every night.
Friends are not like two peas in a pod;
They're people you can talk to
The sky isn't like a basket full of berries;
it's like a pillow full of cotton.
Love isn't a rainbow; it's a couple looking
at the moonlight.

Friends
by Marshawn R.

My friendship is like a light switch.
Off. On. One minute we fight.
The next we are playing together.
We are not friends that always get along.
We are really competitive with one another.
I beat him. He beats me.
Our friendship is the funniest.
You first. No you first.
Our friendship is the weirdest.
You taste it. No you first.
Our friendship is the best. GO
Our friendship is the craziest.
You jump. No you.
But at the end we jump together.

Life (no cliché)
by Hung P.

Life is not just feeling,
but elements of fire, ice, lightning and more inside.
Life is not to live,
but with oranges and monkeys to live with.
Life is not a box of chocolate,
it is just something you have.
Life is to sleep in the afternoon.
Life is bungee jumping out in the
middle of the ocean.
Life is addicting to something odd.
Life is like thinking you can fly.
Life is like living in pudding.
Life is like running in the water.
Life is crazy as a cow.

Friendship
by Sandra A.

Friendship is not the best thing in life,
but it is the best thing when you are in need.
She is not the best in the world
She is ignorant and cold as ice.
Shhhh don't tell her your secrets
if she doesn't tell you hers
She is not your friend if she
is going to betray you.
Watch out she is like a wolf she will
Prey on you and tear these hearts
into pieces.

Life, Is Tacos
by Jeffrey D.

Life is not a dream it's a memory it's in you
you're life. Life is not a bowl of soup
it's like a man walking running jogging
and stopping to your destination. Life is
like an abundant house with nobody
in the house except you. Life is having
fun Life is being nice life is sometimes
sad life could make you mad life
is the reason we survive life is the
way we walk the way we talk the
way we run and the way we
stop and dream about another life
ahead of our own. Life is revolutionary.
Life is cool. Life is you.

¿Friends = Forever?
by Kiara N.

Friends are not forever.
Friends come and go like rainy weather.
Certain friends are sturdy tree stalks.
Others blow like leaves on trees.
Friends that are sturdy, are not
there forever.
They're there as long as they
can be.
Most of the time, that's not
forever.
Friends get into your business,
loving to meddle.
Friends start fights and arguments
over little things.
Friends like to say that they
are forever, and other people are
whatever.
Is that really true?
Other people are important, too.
But they're not always there for
you.
Although friends aren't all you
need, they're there to make things
a little extra special.
