For decades, film and poetry have existed in parallel as media of personal expression meant to touch the lives of their audiences with rich, artistic content and poignant messages. Great film awes its audience with artistic feats: beautiful images, vibrant characters, and captivating stories. In a similar fashion, great poetry draws together words in a way that makes brilliant images and ideas soar off the page and into the minds of its readers. Writers, directors, and poets have come to realize the similarities between the two art forms, and today the connection between them is visible in movies and poems that blend and draw from techniques used in both media.
In the coming year, The Poetry Center of Chicago looks to highlight this oft overlooked connection with Cinema Poetic, a brand new film series that will feature movies about poets and poetry, and explorations of the intersection of poetic and cinematic expression.
Please check back periodically for more details about specific Cinema Poetic events, which will be posted here in the near future. You can also sign up for our mailing list, which will provide you with email updates about Cinema Poetic and other Poetry Center programming.
