Odes to Tigers, Books, Pizza, and more!
Submitted by Cassie Sparkman on October 8, 2009 - 5:54pm.
Today was our seventh class at Tarkington, and the student poets are getting into quite the writing groove. We looked at the traditional Ode today, reading an excerpt from Pablo Neruda's Ode to the Watermelon. We talked about how odes are usually poems of address, use lots of description and transformation, and are really a type of love poem. The Tarkington Tigers went wild, and wrote some funny, beautiful Odes. Enjoy!

Ode to Books
by Olivia F.

O beautiful books
sitting around
waiting to be picked up,
Your pages
flowing
like waves
moving
from side to side.
Oh, great mighty
book, your cover
is your shield,
it protects you
from the venomous
reader.
When I flip you,
you do this little
dance.
To me, you sound
like a motor
about to run.
You're like a hand-out,
when I'm finished with you
you go to another home.

Ode to Tornadoes
by Ronaldo B.

Oh spinning around, you are
the wind blowing in my
face. A light gray line
reaching up to the heavens.
A giant chimp twisting
in the flow of the wind.
I love your strength
for blowing things away and
destroying everything in your
path.

Ode to the Tiger
by Andreas H.

O courageous tiger
how your stripes
follow you through
the wet rainforest.
O tiger,
how I love
the way you
run, you
stat off
in a fast
acceleration
like lightening
in a big
loud BOOM!
Your short
hair flying
in the air.
O tiger,
now going
to find for
your siblings,
going to catch
and kill an animal to eat.
At the end of
day, you go
home and rest
for the next
day to do it
all over again
like a tiger
going to the
heavens, like an
ordinary tiger
should.

The Willis Tower
by Rosalba M.

O beautiful Willis
Tower
you are so big and fat.
You are like
a toothpick about
to go in someone's
mouth. I love your
little flashing lights
on your little point.
You are like a big
spaceship
about to go
to space.
O Willis Tower
you are
like the painting
of my eye.

Ode to the Sharks
by Damarie M.

O you are a killer
from the killer gorge
the Great Blue
oh my friend

a water world
just for him
family at home
depending on him

a fish
that eats meat.
Don't settle
for tiny planktons
but settle
for fish.

Wandering
at the bottom
of the sea.

Watching for
prey.

A lovely
creature
but
don't get
too close.

Move fast
don't try to
out-run it
or
out-swim it.
O, killer shark.

That Animal
by Tequila B.

O beautiful tiger,
I love your long, sharp toes
and long skinny/fat legs,
a pair of arms and legs.

Hop, hop, hop.
I love your feet moving
across the grass of the
forest.
The foot marks you
leave behind of
evidence.

Daughter of Cheetah
Granddaughter of Jaguar
Cousin of Zebra.

You are the remover
good from bad
end to end.
You give me dreams
of running animals.

Ode to Parakeet Green
by Mikah C.

Oh beautiful parakeet green
how I love your adventurous
color.
You're the color of nature.
You are the grass in my yard
the leaves on trees
Karina's folder on her desk
the SPEAK! poster in the classroom
the GO signal on the street
my grip on my pencil.

My Dog Rocky
by Amir B.

Oh beautiful Rocky,
how you came
out of your
egg shell.
How you sleep,
laying on
my bed
like it's
yours.
Every time
there is
a knock
on the
door, I hear you bark and your
ears remind
me of the
Rocky Mountains.
How your
mouth reminds
me of a
diving board
line. I am
diving in a
pool of
orange juice.
Your eyes
brown as
my skin
but you
still see
the color
black and
white.
O dog, how I
enjoy being next to you
and how you enjoy being
next to me. Your pal,
Amir.

Ode to the PSP
by Nicholas C.

You are a star in my
sky.
I love you so
much I
never hurt
you.
You are like the
dog in my yard.
You
are the bike
that I
ride.
You are the
bed that I
sleep in.
You are
the
bowl that
I eat out
of.
I got you
when I
was 6,
and I will
have you till
I die and
then I
will pass
you to my
son and
then to
his son.

Cold Stone
by Amanda P.

O beautiful snow
I love the way
you fall on the
trees
land on the cold
grass.
It's like a cold
room.
White as a piece
of blank paper,
as pretty as
a teddy bear.
O beautiful snow
you are my
shining star
the way you
love my eyes.
I can't ignore
you
O beautiful snow!

Loveable Pizza
by Jonathan M.

O beautiful pizza, I love your
greasy top and your cheese too.
How do you do it, to be so joyful
and good as well as bad? Your topping
pepperoni also is a good friend to
you. You and it make a good
couple. Without you, I would die.
How did they create you, wonderful
thing? When I bite into you, you make
me feel warm and at home. But
when I finish you I feel sad like
I murdered you.

Everything About Oranges
by Daresha H.

O oranges,
so juicy and sweet,
when I peel you
you squirt
juice in my eyes,
you make me blind for a second.
O oranges,
you are so juicy
and tender.
You make me
sad when you
are gone.
O oranges,
you bounce
like a basketball.
O oranges,
you kick like a
soccer ball in the afternoon.
