The Secret Lives of Things
Submitted by Molly Backes on March 25, 2009 - 4:00pm.
This week we read Carl Sandburg's class "I Am the Grass" and talked about personification. Why do we personify the objects in our lives? What kinds of stories could the things around us tell? What would it be like to have a memory that stretched far longer than just one human life? The students imagined their ways into the voices of inanimate objects, and shared what they saw.

I am the Light by Jeffrey D.
I know what it feels like to burn I know what it feels like to give I know what it feels like to be a giant I know what it feels like to be rotating Even when it seems like I don't move at all I know what it's like to have my people rotating around me always around and around and around I am the source that grows I make the seasoning salt you know of I make salt and pepper I am the light.
Rum Rum by Torkeshea B.
Rum Rum my engine starts as you stick your key in my Ignition
As you step on my gas to get me going each day
As you fill up my tank When I almost out of oxygen
As you clean my eyes when it rains
When you step on my brake to stop me at a red light
As you put me in reverse when you get ready to park me again
As you named me Linda.
Poetry by Sandra A.
I am the building that shelters more than 100 people. I am the brave who is sturdy when a wind, storm, or rain occurs. I don't give up. Sometimes people crack my knuckles and scrape my body on accident. Then I have to be fixed. When it's summer I take care of the trees getting in my way. When it's winter my toes get cold but I get help to be cleaned up. I get cold so I start to shiver and I give heat to the people in- side of me. When my eye- glasses get dirty it gets cleaned up with soap and water. I look out to others but I see no one like me.

The Plane, The Jet. by Camillus J.
The Plane: I know what it feels like o go in and past the clouds. I know what it feels like when I'm flying and a rain storm hits. I take people to different states or countries wherever they want to go it doesn't matter to me as long as I get to fly I am the plane I am the future.
The Jet: I speed past the wind. Going faster than a speeding bullet. No one can catch me. No one can see me.

Natural Disaster by Jeremy W.
I am a skyscraper The thunder hits my head. It makes my head itch. The tornado threw me it made me broken. The earthquake turned me to pieces. The strong wind pushed me back and forth. I heard the wind say I am small.
