Human Being
Submitted by Larry Dean on November 10, 2009 - 3:14pm.
This week discussed personification—talking about something that isn't human but in human terms. We read Alberto Blanco's poem, The Parakeets and talked about the ways the birds were described in the poem.
Students were then asked to imagine they were something other than a human, either living or inanimate, and write a poem as if they were that thing.

The Grasshopper Michael D.
Everyday the same thing kids try to squish me adults spraying poison all over the grass the dirt and the cement there is no food people try to kill me because of my loud chirps I look for food in the house. When they spray the poison, the people die and I stay with all the food. I finally won.

I am an elephant I could talk to animals and speak to them I see my friends meant to see you and I like peanuts I use my trunk to suck them so I could slide it and I use my trunk to slide water so I take a bath so I can not smell bad and I swim better and I play with my friends and I'm big and I walk and I could see trees and people.
Elephant Adrian M.
If I was an elephant I will see the whole world and see what is going on above me and see what's going on around me. I will play around in the water with other elephants. I will play fight with other elephants. I will walk around the world with other elephants and eat plants and drink water.

They talk always with a bark they get scared at lightning storms. They get excited, they need exercise like us and have to take baths.
They see everything black and white like prisoners do. They smell their favorite food right away.
But only the nice ones go away first.

They're on your face they help you see. Don't drop me or you will break my glass eyes. Don't step on me you will break my legs. If you lose me you won't be able to see.

There was a little ant sitting on a beach he was trying to climb the fence it was as tall as the sky. He saw children climb it really easy so he tried and tried until his friend the eagle helped him.
Spider Teresa P.
If I was a spider then I would not like people killing me and it is cool throwing spider web and making spiderweb houses for me to live in but I sometimes hate people who kill my other friends (spiders).

I am an ant. I see people that are big, please don't step on me I'm just an ant. I need help! Someone help me find shelter. I need help before people squash me. I fly into the air and jump on a guy's head. He goes home and I jump off time to eat. So I eat his food he finds me and I hide in a box he doesn't find me. I am an ant I see a beetle we talk to him he said he's been there for a long time. I say wow. I think I better go cause I don't want to get squashed.

Don't use me I just get smaller and when I finish I will be dead. Please oh please don't use me. I will cry each time you sharpen me.
I am like everyone else —I the pencil— all day I pray that you don't use me and at night I get bad dreams.
With my eraser (my hair) I get less each day. Nice lead and nice everything. My heart is in a hard place until you break it.
I'm like everyone —me the pencil—. The ones that work the best are in your desk.
Flag Daniel T.
I am a flag and I want to know how you see the world. I see it high sunny and even snowy. I never get to walk or talk to somebody. I wish I was you let's switch bodies. No, why? Not cause I have a family. I don't care come here. I am going to call the cops. They will never believe you. I am going to call them. Come back.
